August 2009

To My Friends and Well-wishers,

I am so appreciative of the fact that you are eager to help with the Gambia Project. As a direct result of the support and enthusiasm of my school, church and biological families and their efforts to share with others, there has been a wonderful outpouring of generosity to raise funds for the children in the Gambia. I am soooooo grateful. Without this kind of support, many of the children will not be able to attend school.

I hope the following information will help each person, who desires to support me and the children in the Village of Lamin, in The Gambia, to have an elementary school. At this point, there is no school for them. I anticipate starting in September this year (2009). I will begin with the youngest children, Kindergarten to first grade (90 children). The ages may range from four to ten years old because there has been no school available to them.

  • We still need $75, 000.00 to complete Phase I of the school. Right now the dollar is worth 20 times the dalasi, which is the currency in the Gambia.
  • To sponsor a child for one school year it would cost $200.00. That would include a school uniform, shoes, tuition, books and lunch. However the average parent can’t afford this.
  • The Gambia College has partnered with us to provide the teaching staff. To support the salary for one teacher, it would cost $65.00 a month.
I will be leaving on September 26, 2009 with Faith Fisher, the trainer for the DI Reading program, and my executive assistant Helen Massey, to follow up with the teachers who were trained this summer. I am thanking everyone in advance for your support. The Imani Foundation is a tax exempt 501 (C) (3) organization and our Tax Exempt Number is 20-1506961.
